If you want to learn drawing cartoon animals for pleasure or profit, sometimes, the first hurdle to overcome is the belief that drawing is difficult.
In school, we sometimes end up believing that drawing requires an artistic talent and only those ‘born’ with this highly specialized talent will succeed. Take my word for it, everyone CAN draw!
The thought of drawing for profit can be daunting and may even seem unachievable, but in truth, if you can put an idea across in a drawing, no matter how simple it is, then you are a cartoonist!
Animals can be great subjects for cartoons. Think of cartoon characters such as Snoopy, Garfield or even the legendary Mickey Mouse! They all have world-wide appeal and huge followings. Yet these characters are very simple constructs – once you have learned the techniques, it becomes very simple to create an animal character.
To be able to draw convincing cartoon animals, you need an understanding of how your subject moves and looks realistically. Drawing teaches you to observe the things around you, if you wish to draw you must first learn to see. Learn to recognise the relationships between different shapes and then draw them.

Cartoon animals are typically drawn from circles, ovals and cylinders. So when you start drawing your character as a cartoon, simplify it into modular parts. These are the basic components of the cartoon, and you can add movement and expression by the way you put the components together.
Copying is a good way to learn drawing cartoon animals, try turning the original upside down and then draw it. Use light lines when sketching shapes, they are much easier to correct.
Drawing can lead to inner satisfaction and relaxation and sometimes even self realization - no matter what level of perfection is attained.

I spent this morning sketching a butterfly, but then decided to see how it would look as a cartoon. It took about 3 hours to get it right, but hey, I’m still learning.
With the techniques taught in Cartoon Paint, I found it really easy to get the different sections done without spoiling anything I had already finished. Drawing Cartoon Animals is a lot easier than I thought it would be, and I am really enjoying it.
I am using a graphic tablet and Corel Painter, and the course includes a few special brushes that also make it easier. I did try drawing with a mouse, but the pen and tablet feel so much more natural. It’s just like drawing on paper only so much easier to correct any mistakes. I can highly recommend using a graphics tablet if you are doing cartoon drawing on your computer.

I am having so much fun with this course, just had to put up another of my attempts at drawing a cartoon face.
It’s so easy once you have the know how.

CARTOON PAINT ROCKS! This is the first time I have used this course and I can’t draw!
After watching the videos and following the techniques, I ended up with this! It’s probably not a typical cartoon drawing, but boy did I have fun doing this. Now I am wondering how I’ll go with more practice. Maybe if I become good enough, I can do some illustrating and make a bit of money from it.
I can see a lot of things I can improve, but for a first attempt that didn’t take very long to do, I think it’s OK.

There is some really good information in this paper on how to draw a cartoon. I found it useful, clear and easy to follow, I hope you do as well.
